THE PERFECT STORM
2000

December 19, 2000

DVD

George Clooney. Mark Wahlberg. Diane Lane. John C. Reilly.

The swordboat Andrea Gail disappeared in a storm in 1991. This is the story of what probably happened.

The book THE PERFECT STORM was one of the greatest things I've ever read. I passed it around to people and each and every one of them loved it. On opening day, I was at the first showing of this film. This was my second viewing. Let's just say it lost something the second time. The effects weren't quite so stunning, the music was a bit heavy handed, and most of all the story was full of cardboard cutouts and manipulative characters. I still believe that the story is inherently compelling. I recommend Junger's book to everyone and the movie is good for a couple hours diversion. Clooney is a charismatic guy, you can see why his crew would head into a storm for him. It's a big Hollywood popcorn movie adapted from a fantastic, compelling character-driven book.
