(By the way, I like what you said about the sense of accomplishment felt afterward. I felt just that after the tunnel and fire hydrant scenes in Irreversible). I don't think it is an especially interesting film. It deals with themes that have been exhausted in feminist literature. I also agree entirely with your comments about the characters. On the other hand, having read a couple of reviews online, I am quite interested by the different reactions of male viewers. Indeed, having watched the film alone (and not needing, thus, to concern myself with the possible discomfort of others) I hadn't really considered the shocking nature of particular images.
